Honesty in communication is always a good building block to real and lasting relationships. If you can't be honest you simply can't be real. For me it has been the foundation of how I have attempted to shape my leadership style. Leading with a heart, but not avoiding the need to think through things that provide a genuine stewardship for the business. Whether you are in sales, retail, fast food, marketing doesn't matter. You are in the people business. You are in the listening business. You must understand what drives others and in turn you will learn that drives the business. Getting those things to work in tandem is how progress is made and becomes sustainable. We all have a role to play. That role can and will change depending on the circumstance. I've been in situations where I knew it was my responsibility to lead from the front. I've been in situations where I knew I shouldn't. We have an amazing opportunity everyday to help foster growth and equip people with tools, support and confidence to reach their personal and professional goals. Our intent should not be to feel required to lead, but rather to create a reciprocal understanding that we all can lead, and there will be times we must follow. Again, communication creates the necessary avenues for people to exert their strengths and to find their voice. It allows people to feel able to reach their potential, and not be afraid of the adversity they must face before they do. Leadership is an honor. Servant leadership is a privilege. Communicate your intent often. Be transparent, and always remember, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?" (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.) Lead with that and your relationships and endeavors will always be lasting, real, and built on a foundation of trust and transparency.
